Even though the name suggests a dark beach, you won’t see much in the way of blackness. Black Rock Sands is an open, wide beach with fine sands.

Distinctive remains of a native Welsh castle, probably begun by Prince Llywelyn ab Iorwerth ('the Great') around 1221. Castell y Bere was a remote outpost on Llywelyn’s southern frontier, but it was vital to his security.

Probably built by Llywelyn ab Iorwerth ('the Great') early in the thirteenth century, the castle is dominated by a massive round-towered keep, still standing up to 50 feet (15.2m) high.

Where to begin? Think of an activity and there’s a good chance that you can do it here. Go karts, quad bikes, archery, fishing and ten-pin bowling are just some of the things on offer.

Tŷ Hyll, or the ‘Ugly House’, is the Snowdonia Society’s flagship property offering nature and conservation activities for people of all ages, inspiring a love for nature and for Snowdonia’s wild beauty and heritage.

This lovely little line runs alongside Llyn Padarn in the Padarn Country Park for a there-and-back journey of five miles. Stop off for a lakeside picnic at Cei Llydan, or visit the National Slate Museum at Gilfach Ddu.
