Fishing

The high peaks of Snowdonia overlook the Llŷn Peninsula and the Irish Sea coast which is strewn with differing fishing locations, mountain granite rock mass plunging steeply into the sea giving deep water fishing marks close to shore. The area’s 300km of coast is strewn with cosy sandy storm and pebble beaches, which are a magnet to the fish that inhabit them. The Menai Straits which divides the mainland from Anglesey is set in stunning scenery. The fishing here is mainly spring to late autumn with bass being the main quarry, best fished on a rising tide. Baits include crab, rag and lug, spinning is also effective.Dinas Dinlle itself is another venue well worth a visit as late spring early summer sees the arrival of the tope packs. Don't forget about Trawsfynydd Lake, Visit Wales named it as one of the five best lakes in Wales. Why not give it a try?

A game fisherman’s heaven, Snowdonia has more than a 100 lakes (‘llyn’ in Welsh), all with their own distinct character and setting, from the glacial Llyn Cwellyn in the north to Tal y Llyn with its exquisite calm and beauty nestling between dramatically steep mountain slopes in the south. Wales’ largest natural lake Llyn Tegid,in Bala, stretches out gracefully between the high peaks of Aran Benllyn, Arenig Fawr and the spectacular Berwyn mountains. Llyn Crafnant, Llyn Dywarchen, and Cregennan lakes are well stocked with excellent trout whilst the stunningly beautiful glacial Llyn Ogwen and Nantlle hold elusive wild brown trout. Trawsfynydd lake, the location of Camelot as seen in the film First Knight, has hosted numerous international fishing competitions and is regarded as one of the premiere fishing reservoirs in Wales. Excellent river fishing is available on various rivers throughout the region including the Llyfni, Dwyfor, Glaslyn, Mawddach and Conwy. Known for their wild brown trout, abundant salmon and sea trout can also be caught during late summer.

The traditional nature of the region’s fishing has ensured that local Welsh fly patterns such as the Diawl Bach, Haul a Gwynt and Coch y Bonddu are still firm favourites today. However, some excellent Coarse fishing available mainly on privately owned lakes is regarded as a fast growing alternative to the more traditional fly fishing.

Excellent shore and sea fishing is available along most of the stunning 300km coastline, in particular places such as Caernarfon, Conwy, Nefyn, Llanfairfechan, Penmaenmawr and Trefor whilst charter boat fishing can be organised from many of the harbour villages and marinas. The numerous tackle shops are happy to advise.
