Porthor (Whistling Sands)

This small, picturesque National Trust beach, backed by steep grassy cliffs, is on the Llŷn Heritage Coast. It’s famously known as ‘Whistling Sands’, a nickname based on the sound the granules make underfoot when you walk over its gleaming sand. The sound is created due to the shear stress of weight that is put upon the sand, there are only two beaches in the whole of Europe where you can experience this for yourselves. The nearest car park is 590ft/180m away, though that doesn’t prevent it from being popular with families enjoying a day out. The views from the sands – and the many local footpaths – are stunning. There are dog restriction areas on the beach. Throughout the summer months the beach has a shop and toilets.

Be aware of the following dangers on Porthor (Whistling Sands) beach. 

• Beware of strong currents
• Beware of large breaking waves
• Take care with inflatables in strong winds
• Beware of powered craft
• Unstable cliffs – do not climb or dig into the cliffs
• Keep children under supervision
