Cycle Tracks

There’s more to Bethesda, or ‘Pesda’ as the locals fondly call it, than its quarrying past. You’ll find beautiful scenery, especially along the Lôn Las Ogwen cycling and walking paths. The spectacular lakes of Llŷn Ogwen and Llyn Idwal are in the rocky mountains above the village.

Caban

Caban, near Gerlan, is a hostel popular with outdoor enthusiasts.

Slate Industry

The slate industry played a huge part in shaping Bethesda’s identity. Its produce was shipped to many international destinations, gaining it a reputation as one of the world’s finest slate quarries. The remains of this important era can still be seen to this day, especially in the region of Braichmelyn where the small traditional houses of the quarrymen survive.

Cwm Idwal

Cwm Idwal is a ‘must-see’, a dramatic natural feature carved by glaciers which attracts hill walkers, naturalists and geologists. Equally compelling are the Carneddau, a wild mountain range dotted with remains from the Bronze Age.
