Mynydd Mawr
Above Aberdaron, Mynydd Mawr headland commands breathtaking coastal views – on a clear day it’s possible to see Wicklow Mountains in Ireland. It’s also a wonderful spot for wildlife-watching – look out for puffins, kestrels, dolphins and seals.
Close to Aberdaron is the small National Trust manor house of Plas yn Rhiw. Celebrated poet R S Thomas lived in a cottage within its delightful grounds. Displays on his life and work can be seen in the 12th-century St Hywyn’s Church in the village.
Bardsey Island
Bardsey, the ‘Isle of 20,000 Saints’, lies two miles across the water from Aberdaron’s sandy beach. In the days of pilgrimage when three visits to Bardsey equalled one to Rome, Aberdaron became the last stop for many pilgrims before they crossed the treacherous waters of Bardsey Sound.
Aberdaron is a former fishing village and community with idyllic views.
