Local Attractions

This popular town has an appealing range of shops and attractions. No less than three narrow-gauge railways have stations here: the Welsh Highland to Caernarfon (a new link), the shorter Welsh Highland Heritage (a 2008 Wales in Bloom winner for its railway station), and the Ffestiniog (to Blaenau Ffestiniog). Other places of interest include the Snowdon Mill and Grade II-listed Grisiau Mawr (Big Steps) above the historic harbour.

Maritime Museum

Porthmadog’s past as a busy harbour town and slate-exporting port is recalled in the Maritime Museum.

The Cob

The town’s most famous landmark is the Cob, a mile-long embankment built by 19th-century entrepreneur William Madocks, a major engineering feat that also reclaimed some much-needed agricultural land.

Black Rock Sands

Travel a few miles west and you’ll come to Morfa Bychan and Black Rock Sands, a vast beach with a multi-coloured rocky headland with low-tide caverns. Just to the east is the enchanting Italianate village of Portmeirion, set on its own peninsula.
