The challenging links courses of Nefyn, Aberdovey and the famous Royal St David’s at Harlech have all been included in Golf Monthly magazine as being amongst the best 100 golf courses in Britain. Nefyn located on a cliff top on the Llŷn Peninsula is one of the most scenic courses in the UK and probably one of the most challenging.
The championship courses of both Aberdovey and the historic Royal St David’s Harlech which hosted the Ryder Cup Welsh Seniors Open, are long established and immensely popular attracting golfers back time and time again. The championship course at Conwy, spectacularly located between mountain, river and sea has many a tale to tell, Porthmadog is an interesting mixture of heath and links.

The courses of Pwllheli and Abersoch on the Llŷn Peninsula, the parkland courses of Caernarfon, Criccieth and St Deiniol, Bangor and the many inland courses are all set in magnificent scenery and together offer variety and enjoyment to golfers of all levels of ability. Many hotels in the region offer golf package holidays - for more information contact the Tourist Information Centres or see the current edition of Snowdonia Mountains and Coast Golf Guide.

The Cambrian Railways…The Winning Way to the Fairway

A new initiative to encourage golfers to travel by train to 12 of the golf courses served by the Cambrian Railways has been launched.

As part of the scheme most of the participating golf clubs near the Cambrian network have agreed to provide a discount to those who travel to them by train.

The initiative ‘tee’d off’ as part of an event, facilitated by the Association of Community Rail Partnerships (ACoRP),  in Cardiff to launch the ‘Sustainable Transport and Tourism Assessment’ report that is intended to develop closer links between tourism and transport in Wales.

In launching the ‘Cambrian Railways…The Winning Way to the Fairway’ Heritage Minister, Alun Ffred Jones, said: "I'd like to congratulate Arriva Trains Wales and the Cambrian Railways Partnership on this initiative which will enable golf visitors to Mid Wales to travel with ease around the region and leave their cars at home. With Wales hosting the Ryder Cup in 2010 there is more focus than ever before on Wales as a golf tourism destination. As well as using the train to access some of our best Golf courses visitors will also be able to see more of Wales by benefiting from discounted entry to some of the area's wonderful attractions. Golf in Wales is golf as it should be."

Referring to the scheme Jim Mcleod, Golf Professional at Aberystwyth Golf Club, said, “It’s fantastic that we are able to work together in this way with the area’s other golf clubs and the railway to promote the golf and rail package for our mutual benefit.”

The project was developed by the Cambrian Railways Partnership working with the participating golf clubs and benefited from support provided by Tourism Partnership Mid Wales.

Ben Davies from Arriva Trains Wales said “This is another good example of an initiative we have delivered through the Cambrian Railways Partnership that promotes travel by trains on the Cambrian network. As well as increasing passenger numbers on the trains such schemes also help support local businesses, in this case the Golf Clubs, and the wider local economy.”
